Director, DG Education and Culture, European Commission.

Jordi Curell is the director responsible for Lifelong Learning: horizontal Lisbon policy issues and international affairs in the European Commission, DG Education and Culture. This includes supporting, developing and implementing lifelong learning policy, with particular regard to the key role of education and training in the Lisbon strategy, its external dimension and the role of the agencies and the Jean Monnet Programme. It also includes supporting the establishment and long-term development of the European Institute for Innovation and Technology (EIT) activities as a worldclass innovation institution.

Since 1986, Jordi Curell, has worked in different positions in the European Commission, including in DG Employment, where he was responsible for coordinating the preparation and implementation of the European Social Agenda.

Jordi Curell from the Directorate General of Education and Culture at the European Commission confirmed that the role of education in Europe is “fundamental” as without it no prosperity or sustainability would be possible. To improve ICT integration both specific knowledge and basic competences are required from teachers and students and schools. In Curell’s opinion another step must be taken, but not considering ICTs as a specific subject but as a “learning method”.
